There is also Crochet Pattern CentralAnd most large yarn manufacturers have free patterns online as well - I know Bernat, Lion & Red Heart do.

This one is only 10cm x 10cm (4inches x 4 inches) so really the size of a coaster. But it's just an example size.
The crochet version is crocheted in the round with only one seam to sew up. This knitted version is knitted in the round however there are 2 diangonial seams to sew up.
For this experiment I used some white double knitting yarn with a strain of 2ply coloured yarn to make one strain of new yarn.
I used a 4mm knitting needle
Cast on 60stitches then simply joined into a round and used a knit stitch only. You can used any pattern or yarn you fancy once you get the basics down.
I did a few rounds then laid it flat to measure it ie how wide it was it was 14 cm wide (5 & and half inches)
So you can fold it to make the design you only need to knit it long enough to be half the width so in this case I knitted until it was 7cm (2 and 3/4 inches)
ok some photos to follow

My knitting needle When I'd knitted a few rows I sewed up the seem at the bottom of the knitting (This is the extra seam you don't get with the crochet version. I've sewn it up in grayish brown yarn so you can see it. When it was the correct length ie half the size of the width I cast off. folded so the cast off seam was laying diangional through the centre and began sewing it up. You can see I've sewn up half of the seam. This is the same seam you would have if you'd made this in crochet.

I think had I used either a longer length between the needle points or used a set of 5 single double pointed knitting needles I could have managed to create it with just one seam. I could have used the toe up sock method.
